Lifestyle Photography Fun | Alton, Illinois Family Portrait Photographer

So this is the first of four blog posts coming this week. I spent a few days in Dallas at the tail end of December and some of my most favorite clients took me up on the opportunity to do a little shooting while I was there.

Like Kristin and her clan of stunning children. And really, I'm not sure she and her husband could make unattractive kids. This family is dear to my heart because I've shot two of her births. There's something really awesome about watching kids grow up in front of your lens. When tiny Joon came into view I nearly hit the ground. It's literally been a YEAR since I saw him. Last time he was a teeny, tiny two week old newborn.

Talk about a laid back, fun, lifestyle family photo shoot. It wasn't intended to be a "concept" shoot necessarily but it sort of bled into that with my borrowing a chalk board for a fun prop and them bringing a few old, colorful quilts. I'd LOVE to do more prop/location themed shoots this year! Add to their friendly, easygoing vibe a warm December afternoon with the most stunning golden sunshine you've ever seen and, well, Kristin and I were very, very happy girls. Enjoy!

I wasn't lucky enough to be at this Sweet Thang's birth, but I love her all the same. I originally met her at her beautiful Mama's maternity session (waaay back when I didn't even offer portraiture!) and she's a trip. Always fun times when Miss Millie is around. ;)

Back to the Business of Birth | St Louis Birth Photographer

I've noticed over the years, we photographers often have a path that led us into the art of still photography. It's not something you just fall into and take up because it's there. It takes an innate love and skill set that is almost inborn. From portraits to still life to photojournalism, we all have the passion that drives us to keep pressing that shutter button and capturing the things we see around us.

For this girl, it was birth.

While I offer portraiture and love it very much, at my heart I am a photojournalist. I want to be the fly on the wall capturing the action in front of me. Shots like the one above? I don't just love to capture them. I live for it.

Birth photography has always been around as long as cameras have been at births. But the business of capturing birth on film/camera for a client was just starting to pick up steam in 2005 when my passion for birth itself was in its infancy. I was pregnant with my third child, planning a home birth, and finding stunningly beautiful images of birth on the Internet. It captured my interest immediately.

In 2004-2005, as I was nurturing the babe growing in my belly, I was also nurturing the love of the art of birth photography. I wanted this to be my life, my career. I absolutely loved and was fascinated by birth. I already enjoyed the art of photography. In 2006, I was given permission to shoot my first birth. The ONLY one I've ever missed. My clients called too late and I was unable to make the 40 minute drive to the birth center fast enough to shoot the actual birth. But what I learned was irreplaceable.

I had never had work that I was so passionate about. To this day, nearly 6 years later, I have yet to find anything that grips me with the same excitement, the same joy, the same vitality that birth photography brings to me.

My sadness in December 2010 at shooting what I knew would be my last birth for quite some time was a little overwhelming. Yes, I was still offering portraiture and my photography business has continued to grow and thrive, but my status as single mom meant that the unpredictable nature of birth was off the table. Possibly for a very long time. I was nearly distraught.

My fiance, Jay, says that my face lights up when I talk about birth photography. It's what most animates me.

And why wouldn't you love it? The long nights, the weeks of living on call- ready to drop everything and go at a moment's notice, the sleeping with one hand on your cell phone (and obsessively checking your phone when a Mama has started laboring), the foggy mornings of editing last night's images.....

It's a calling. It's a passion. It's my life. Other than Jay and my children there is literally nothing I love more.

And now, it's back in my life.

Breathtaking happily introduces birth photography back into it's menu of choices, beginning with due dates in late February 2012. I'm just absolutely delighted to begin this work that so fills me with joy and allows me to give my clients a glimpse into their births that they would not otherwise have.

I shoot at home, at birth center, and at hospitals around the St. Louis Metropolitan area and into Illinois. I work equally as well at c-sections as I do at home births, with obstetricians as well as with midwives.

I will accept 4 births per month and offer a fantastic Belly+Birth+Baby package at a discount for the complete boutique photography experience.

Baby Planner Cami | Alton Illinois Baby Photographer

Long ago, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I went to high school with a pretty lady named Amy. All these years later she's given birth to three beautiful daughters. The last of whom is the subject of this humble blog post. Baby Camryn is so much like her mother in looks and expression I crack up every time I see this image:

That's TOTALLY an "Amy" look right there. A cocked eyebrow that denotes her incredulity at the world. "Really? You're going to get me all dressed up and drag me outside and take my photo? What ARE you thinking!?"

Yes, yes I am kid. And you're gonna LIKE it.

No? Not yet? Let's try it again....

Hmmmmm... I know. We'll get big sister Taylor in on the action. That should do the trick.

Yeah, that's what I thought. *grin*

I Love This Family | Alton, Illinois Family Photography

I almost always blog the same day I shoot. Why? Because I can't stand it. I'm usually so giddy over my images that I HAVE to get home, download, and edit sneaks. It's just how I've always done it.

But this family... this family took some time. Because I just couldn't come up with a good enough description for them. I've completely fallen in love with them all. And photogenic doesn't even begin to cover it.

You might recognize Casey and her clan from my past posts about Relish Designs. We're neighbors, we're close friends, we'll some day be business partners I've no doubt. In short, I adore her/them. We met in Downtown Alton for a walk along antique row and had a freaking blast. You can't help but have fun when you're with them. Enjoy the hilarity. We sure did. ;)

Yes, I know the formatting is off! Pppppttttffffftttt!!!! I will be switching the Breathtaking Blog to Wordpress soonsoonsoon. In the mean time, I've LOVING these new storyboards.

Happy Mother's Day | Alton Family Photographer

You know what I love about my mother?

Her chocolate brown eyes. The sound of her voice. The way her eyes crinkle when she smiles. The way she always can tell when I'm upset when I'm faking it for the rest of the world. And our relationship is complicated, to be sure. But I love her with my whole, entire being. And now that I have my own Six Pack I understand her so much better. I know now that mothers are just human beings- doing the very best they can to take care of and raise other human beings. We aren't perfect, we have many, many (many) flaws, and we fail... sometimes several times a day. But we love our children. Deeply. Fiercely. With a passion that takes our breath and raises the hair on our arms.

You know something else about mothers? We tend to lurk in the background. And for most purposes I'm just fine with that and in fact, do a fair amount myself of the backstage deck hand stuff. But when it comes to documenting your life with your children... I'm just not okay with that. Because someday you'll be gone. This is a fact of life we all must face.

Someday we won't be here.

All they will have left are the sweet memories in their head.

And the photographs.

So today I'm announcing a little giveaway over on the Breathtaking Facebook page. I don't care if you're overweight. I don't care if you don't like your hair. I don't care if you think "I take TERRIBLE pictures" (don't worry, I know how to make ya look GOOD!). Your kids don't care either. Someday they will open those old photo albums and point to your image and say "This was my mother and I loved her with all my heart". And they won't give a damn about anything other than your smile.

Yes, I may have little tears in my eyes. I'm such a sap.

Little Miss I'm Not Having It | Children's Photography Alton Illinois

Oh, I've seen some toddlers throw some fits in my time. It's par for the course when working with babies and toddlers is your job AND you've got three under school age at home, too. So when Miss Keira showed up at her session last night with her "No pictures, please" attitude going on she didn't know that she'd met her match. Yet. ;)

Big brother Ben was AWESOME and Mama Kate brought her A-game. Together, we managed to talk Keira into a good mood and subsequently the sky opened up and gave us just a glimmer of beautiful evening sunlight. Thanks to all involved (mother nature included!) for these gorgeous images!

Relish the Moments | Alton, Wood River, Edwardsville, Jerseyville Children's Photographer

Casey of Relish Designs and I got together again this morning for a second modeling shoot. You can see the first one here. I'm always delighted to showcase her work and my children continue to put up with us forcing them into adorable clothing and running them around in gorgeous park settings while in no way allowing them to play on the playground equipment! Poor Nolan and Noah joined us this time and both got completely ripped off as far as playtime goes. Just as we finished, one of my twins fell and gashed the back of his head open. Head wounds bleed. A lot. He's okay but that was the end of our fun. No pictures of the carnage though. LOL

As usual we paired my Hannah and Casey's daughter Reece. I love the way their completely different colorings set off against each other (and Casey did an AMAZING job pairing their clothing for this shoot!)Reece is as fair and delicate as they come with her wide blue eyes and pale golden ringlets. Set against my daughter's flashy copper hair and cat-like topaz eyes they make quite the stunning pair. Or at least, we think so... though we might be slightly biased. ;)

The girls have really become best friends. A relationship I encourage both because I love Reece's Mama so much and because Reece is the sweetest, most well behaved child I've ever met. She was born grown, as Casey likes to say.

She was not amused with me today... ;) That dress is a new design of Casey's that she made specifically for Hannah (I get paid for these modeling sessions in clothing!!!). It's called, of course, the "Hannah"!

Relish Designs+Breathtaking Photography=Awesome | Alton, Illinois Children's Photographer

Here's an example of what happens when beautiful design meets good photography on a gorgeous model:

This is the same darling creature from the snow sessions. Her Mama, Casey, and I went to high school together. As fate would have it, I landed just a block or so away from her when we moved back. And as fate would also have it, she and I have a ton in common and have been spending plenty of time hanging out. In fact, I'm not sure we've gone longer than 48 hours without getting together since we moved!

And as you can see above, she's an extremely talented seamstress! I'm always awed by crafty people. She had an "idea" for a dress the other day. Just a concept, mind you. And a few days later I went over there and this had been born:

Yes, my daughter is begging for one just like it, too. And I may or may not have commissioned a similar style for myself for this summer. ;) It's so soft and comfy looking, I couldn't help myself.

More Snow! And my own beautiful children | Alton Portrait Photographer

I warned my children before we moved back to Alton from Texas. They were just SURE it would snow and they would get to play in it. I told them not to count on it. That it may not snow again and they might have to wait until next winter. But Mother Nature didn't let them down! We woke more than once to beautiful, fat, wet flakes of snow coming down hard and fast. Funny thing is, with us being from the South and not really needing much in the way of snow gear, they didn't last long out there! ;) So instead we decided to drive around town and enjoy watching the snow fall. We'd just moved and everything was new and exciting so I drove them up to the Christian Hill historic district to see Riverview Park and oh my.... Thank goodness I brought along my camera!!! Check it-

Gabe and Hannah were the only ones to volunteer to get out of the warm car, ditch the hot chocolate, and stand in the freezing wind for a few snaps. Not to be outdone though, it snowed AGAIN and Noah, who recently turned six (when!? how!? he was just born!!!) bravely went outside in our vine covered, snowy backyard so I could record the occasion.

I love this child...

Isn't this just what childhood is all about right here? Happy Sigh.

Happy to be going back to work soon! Can't wait to meet my new clients and their breathtaking families. :)

It Snows in Illinois! | Alton Children's Photographer

Even in March! And yes, this is not really big news to me. I grew up in Alton so I'm familiar with how March likes to roar in like a Lion around here. She went out like the tamest of lambs, too, as it's now a balmy and very green 65-70 most days. And I'm ready to start shooting again! I've now opened the May calendar to sessions, so hit me up and let's get something on the books.

In the mean time, enjoy my eldest daughter and her new friend Reece (the daughter of a high school chum that lives around the corner from our new house- both generations have hit it off rather well since moving back!) on a cold, snowy, wet, muddy day this past month. :)

Blake- 5 Days New | Alton, Edwardsville, Metro East Newborn Photographer

Mindy contacted me just over a week ago and wanted to know if I could take ONE more newborn session before I moved. And while things are completely crazy around here I jumped at the chance. It took a little finagling on my part to get there (thanks Michelle!) but it was totally worth it in the end. Why? Because I got to meet this sweet boy:

Loading Up and Moving Out! | Alton, Illinois Portrait Photographer

You may have noticed the last couple of blog post titles carrying new keywords. Totally not a mistake. As of Thursday morning I will be transitioning my family from Dallas back to my hometown of Alton, Illinois.

I expect the next couple of months to be a little hectic and hopefully a lot of fun as we reconnect with old friends and meet new ones. Once we're all settled into our new home and routines, I will resume shooting on a more limited schedule. Alton clients, I'll begin booking for May sessions sometime in April. "Like" my Facebook Fan Page to get a heads up on when I begin opening the calendar! And Dallas clients, don't fear. I'll be back for my first "working weekend" in May so you'll have an opportunity to book Breathtaking for your spring portraits as well!

Lots of new and fun things coming up! 2010 was an awesome year for Breathtaking and I have you, my clients, to thank for that.

Hello, Annie! | Metro East Illinois Baby, Toddler, Child Photographer

Little Annie is about to be 18 months old! Her mother and I are friends and I've been lucky enough to attend a couple of births with her (L is a doula). I contacted her the other day about picking up a few hand me down items for Annie and we decided on a little mini-shoot while they were here.

I'm really loving the "in-home" concept for this age group and will definitely be suggesting it to clients from now on! She quickly got comfortable in our playroom and we had a delightful time playing with the kitchen set and reading books while I snapped away. Bonus points for my own toddler sitting still for 15 seconds so I could snap a pic of her yummy curls, too. ;)

Because, well, I know what it's like to want a little down time when you have a small child sucking up every moment of your day. And because it was AWFUL nice of her to take the time to help me out. And as Rhys was in a good mood, one of my toddlers was asleep, and I had my camera all handy and such... this happened.....

7 Things You Don't Know About Chantel...

I was recently tagged in a post from friend/client/soul mate Abbi's blog "Musing of Motherhood" and now I'm supposed to tell you 7 niblets about myself and tag 10 bloggers. I don't actually have TIME to read blogs any more so I don't have 10 people to tag but I will happily rattle off 7 things you (probably) didn't know about me....

1. I am addicted to coffee. More than the average bear. I have had this problem since high school (and a certain someone I met at the small coffee shop up the street from school every morning of my sophomore year) but this sort of crack-level addiction started when I had my twins. I literally had to be up for 24 hour stretches with only 30 minute cat naps to call "sleep" and caffeine kept me alive. I've quit "cold turkey" a few times, most notably last spring, and yet... yeah, I might be drinking a cup right now at 2 in the afternoon. ;)

2. I abhor the cold. In a way that's probably not completely healthy. Part of it is that I have a condition called Raynaud's Syndrome which means the circulation in my hands and feet is less than ideal. Temps below freezing actually cause me pain. I'm much happier in the heat and look forward to summer! Our current temp in DALLAS is 16 today. Brrrr!!!!

3. I have a running list of photography equipment that I'd like to purchase (or better yet, be GIFTED! HA!). The list is long, varied, and expensive. Next on my list? A Canon 5D Mark II and Canon's 28-70 2.8L lens. HEAVEN!

4. I'm seriously considering switching Breathtaking to weddings. I've got some research and details to settle (like the camera body and lens listed above) before I make the leap but since giving up births a mere two months ago I'm really missing the documentary experience. And yes, while what I do with portraits is somewhat documentary in style it's not the same type of storytelling. Births are a huge moment in your life that can never be replaced and retold. Weddings are the same (only much, much more scheduled *wink*).

5. I do my nails about once every year. It lasts approximately 48 hours before becoming chipped to the point of looking ridiculous. I posted this because I'm staring at this year's attempt and it's horrendous. Busy mom of six... not a great candidate for a manicure!

6. I used to be painfully shy. I'm not entirely sure how many weeks I chased my mom down the hall screaming at the beginning of Kindergarten but it was more than a couple. I hated school. At some point, for unknown reasons, I got over it and was actively involved in theater and student government in high school. Well, 'got over it' might be overstating. I'm still somewhat shy and unsure of myself. I just push through it. I like a good challenge.

I'm a lucky lady. My plan was to have four children and I did that. In fact, I had four children in as many years. And then I was allll done. Having four children in four years is quite the logistical feat. But life had other plans and I became a mother of six quite by surprise. When I found out about my fifth pregnancy I was.... less than thrilled. In fact, I think the day the test went pink I actually cried. But then I got used to the idea and it started to grow on me. By the time we got to my 20 week prenatal appointment I was accepting that my life was going a different direction than what I had planned and I was ready to welcome another baby into our family.

And then, on that fateful day, my midwife leaned down to me in a private moment and said...

"Is there a chance your dates are off?"
"No...why?"
"There's an awful lot of baby in there..."

Twins. Two babies. One boy and one girl. You could have knocked me over with a feather. Two babies.

And now they're almost three. Had someone asked me if I wanted to have twins and if I wanted to have them seventeen months after their older sister and if I wanted six children all aged six and under I would have laughed and asked them if I could have some of whatever they were smokin.

But we don't always know what's best for ourselves. And this is what I got out of the deal:

High School Buddies! | Alton, Godfrey, Bethalto Family Photographer

This is why I love Facebook. These girls were two of my best friends in high school but as often happens when people graduate and move onward into their lives, we lost touch. 15 years later we talk almost daily on that great social networking site called Facebook. And I love it. They both enrich my life and I'm very glad to have them around. Even more exciting is that when I move back to Alton (more coming on that soon in another blog post!) they will get to be IN PERSON friends... even better!

I went on a weekend trip (ALONE! Without kids!) in October and got to spend some time hanging out with them both. We had a fabulous evening enjoying the local nightlife which is something I rarely get to do as a mom of six! We met up the following day at a local community college which has the perfect grounds to use as photography backdrops. I suspect it will be a haunt of mine later this year.

Bethany has a cute little boy and a very sweet husband. She was still sporting an adorable baby bump back in October which eventually turned into a sweet baby girl named Evie (watch out for images of her little self this spring!). They were a blast to shoot as we have very similar personalities. That Lucas was a little ham. ;)

Next up was Nicole. Now, Nicole and I got into a lot of fun and a little bit of trouble in High School. Some of my fondest memories involve zooming around our little home town in her silver Jetta. She's just as much fun now as she was then. Love her. :)

And THIS little cutie!!! I think my daughters are going to love her to bits. She so totally has her mother's evil little gleam in her eye...

Tiny and Determined | Dallas, Carrollton, Allen Newborn Photographer

"Determined" being code for "the hardest newborn I've ever run up against". My apprentice/friend Chelle often calls me "The Baby Whisperer" and clients are always commenting on how calm and patient I am when handling newborn babies. They pee, they poop, they cry, they fuss, they refuse to settle... but they always, always eventually give in and give me what I want. Usually fairly quickly and I've, um, gotten a little spoiled. Perhaps it's the six newborns of my own that I snuggled and rocked and shushed into deep slumber? Perhaps it's just an inborn ability. Whatever it is, I rarely have issues getting a baby to settle for a session...

And then I met Noah.

Noah didn't want to cooperate. I tried every trick up my sleeve. And then tried some more. Finally the only way it worked was that I would get him settled, snap two shots, and then have to start all over again. But he did give up some beautiful images....eventually... and I've never worked so hard for it in the three years I've been shooting newborns! Even the most difficult give in to me in the end. It's just a gift.

It doesn't happen often. MOST of my clients become friendly but rarely can I say that a client becomes a BEST friend. To be fair, Abbi and I met online before she actually hired me to shoot her family but it was the first time we ever laid eyes on each other. And I loved her as much as I thought I would from the second we said hello. She emailed me yesterday and said "WHAT!? Are we not awesome enough to be on the BLOG!?" Heehee.... The Beauty of the Gaylord Texan | Dallas Family and Child Photographer

I've spent a LOT of time recently at the Gaylord Texan here in Grapevine. See, they put up an amazing INDOOR Christmas display. And it's huge. And varied. And bonus, there are still plenty of NON-holiday areas free of festive decor. Which means, in a nutshell, I can shoot in a variety of locations and everyone stays warm and comfortable. And did I mention it's free because it's a hotel lobby? Ginormous, glass ceiling and all... still a hotel lobby. You only have to pay to park and there's so much to see and do my clients often make a day of it and stay to play after we're done. When I offer it as a location my clients who don't like the cold much usually jump at the chance and as such, I spent almost every weekend in November and December shooting there! Here's a little of the fun:

Oh my, am I behind! Playing catch up is awesome though, cause then I get to relive some of the fun that was had during the INSANE holiday season! I mostly had to keep my head down and plow through that craziness and now is my opportunity to kick back and smile at the gorgeous images that came out of those mad weeks. :)

Last minute minis were such a delightful day! We were at the absolutely beautiful Texan Gaylord in Grapevine, Texas. In fact, there's a whole other post coming with images from my many long weekend days at this stunning resort. It's incredible! I met up with three clients, two new and one favorite. The birth of sweet baby Joon was the last for awhile for Breathtaking and he came just before Christmas. His big brother Huck was born by the light of the Christmas tree just two years before. How lucky for me to be there for both boys' births! I got to go back just 6 days later (once recovering from a bout with the Flu-YUCK!) and shoot Joon's newborn portraits. After a couple of challenging newborn sessions Joon happily surprised me by going to sleep and easily bending into each pose I asked of him. He's a beautiful, PLUMP little guy with a darling stork bite on his forehead. I expect he'll bring his sweet parents and big sister and brother many years of joy in the future. Enjoy. :)

Breathtaking's Last Birth

I'm so sad to write this post. Yes, it's true. Breathtaking won't be offering birth photography in the 2011 year. If you're here looking for someone to photograph your birth in the Dallas metroplex I have several wonderful colleagues that I recommend so drop me a line and I'll hook you up.

As far as last births go, this one with my friend Kristin was the way to do it. Her last birth was one of the first I photographed as a portfolio builder and the first one where I really felt all of my skills come together at once and I got what I'd long been striving to get out of my camera. This time around things were so eerily familiar! Different house but same exact chain of events culminating in a fast, wonderful water birth of a sweet baby boy.

That's the amniotic sac she's slipping over his head there-he was born in it which is said to be good luck. :)

Home birth.... the joy of snuggling into your own bed after you've done the hardest work of your life.

Thank you to all my past clients. It's been an HONOR to serve as the witness to so many wonderful babies coming into the world. This is not good-bye but merely "see you in while". Birth is in my blood and I'll be coming back to it eventually. :)

He was discharged to his mother's regular room on Thanksgiving of all days! What a thing to be thankful for, huh? Despite his rough beginning, he has had no long term effects and is home making life interesting for his parents who are now the proud owners of four boys ages five and under! I can relate to that type of crazy....

I'm a little behind on blogging (again-what was it I said about procrastination....) so I'll be playing catch up again this week.

I was so excited to be hired for Jonna's birth back in the spring. She became a dear friend after we shared our twin pregnancies a couple years ago. Her boys are just a few weeks older than my dynamic duo. Her life often mirrors mine (I'm forever "liking" her Facebook status updates and laughing because similar things are going on here). So when she wanted me to come to her last birth, another beautiful boy to round out her family of four little boys, I was thrilled. Baby Tyler had different plans on how his birth should go from what Mama had in mind. I was in awe of how Jonna just rolled with it as we went from planned VBAC at 9cm to c-section with barely a moment to register what happened.Tyler spent his first few days in NICU getting better but he's home now and has no long lasting effects from a rougher-than-normal start. Here it is, in beautiful detail. :)

I recently met up with two ladies who I've "known" online for several years but had never met in person. They wanted me to capture their beautiful families and I was happy to oblige. We met at the Carrollton Homestead Museum which is a fantastic backdrop for family portraits (and has the bonus of being a very short distance from my house ;)) and I could NOT be happier with the images!

First up was Mary and her stunning collection of boys. Seriously, the eyes on that middle child.....

She loved this one as much as I did. Far from the "perfect" family image (lol) but it really does capture who they are right now. Which is boisterous and full of life!

A Girl After My Own Heart | Carrolton, Dallas, Farmers Branch, Coppell Photographer

As soon as I met Amy, I fell in love with her. She hired me for one on one tutoring (email me for details!) and within about 10 seconds I knew we were going to be fast friends. She has a wicked sense of humor and she totally "gets" mine. She's one of those people I can literally say anything to and never worry the reaction will be judgmental. Come to think of it, one of the best parts about this job of mine is that my clients often end up as friends!

Recently she and I hooked up so I could bring her family to life in print. And what a gorgeous bunch of kids they have (her husband isn't hard to lay eyes on, either!) The sweetest of the bunch is little Piggy Pig who brought her Mama a lot of grief on her way into the world but has been such a blessing of joy since that moment. I LOVED this session and the images that came out of it.

This is D and her lovely family. D was my doula. If you don't know what that means I'll just break it down to say that she stood by me during a very difficult labor. With twins. At home. Yeah, that means without drugs, folks. And D was there for every moment and held me up both literally and figuratively. I was delighted to capture her family on camera because I love them so very much. Her oldest daughter Ness was also at that birth and did a rockin job of her own keeping my oldest son busy while I worked my butt off to give birth to two babies. She's grown up a ton since that day two and a half years ago and my god is she beautiful! This family required a few more sneaks than normal....Enjoy...

This was the first time I've ever shot another photog (not counting my best friend Elizabeth who doesn't count because....well, she's my best friend) and to say I was a little nervous would be a bit of an understatement. We planned to meet at the Addison Fountains in downtown Addison but of course it was a very cool 60 degrees-odd for an October morning in Dallas! Instead, we used the surrounding downtown landscape as our backdrop and I don't know who was more excited/pleased-me or Em! What fun we had discovering new places to shoot together. Beautiful Danea had her baby boy! He's such a sweet little guy. And surprisingly, she had him in less than three hours from the time she woke to contractions! I was literally in the door no more than 5 minutes when Baby Erik floated into his mothers arms. Here he is, at a precious 6 day old...

Big sister Hailey wasn't much in the mood to be cooperative....til we were all done and I was in the process of leaving. Then she laid sweetly with "her" baby and snuggled him. 3 year olds. Hrumph. But I did catch a few with her in them...here's one of my faves.

Belly+Birth+Baby- Danea | Carrollton Maternity Photographer

Beautiful Danea is expecting her second baby; their first son. I had the pleasure of booking my Belly+Birth+Baby package with her a few months back and recently we met to document her burgeoning belly. I just LOVE these B+B+B bookings, maybe only slightly second to my Breathtaking Baby first year session package. Meeting and connecting with a client during her pregnancy, getting to document all the excitement and joy of labor/birth, and then following up with a sweet-soft newborn baby? Heaven. Hmmm...perhaps I like it just as much as the Breathtaking Baby plan? Best yet, just book the whole thing and I'll stick with your family as the year twirls around and you have a toddler on your hands! ;)

Here she is--the session was so playful I did a bit of unique editing...and I LOVE how it turned out. We met in the heat/humidity of a Texas summer (her 36 weeks pregnant!) and to cool off we eventually climbed into the creek. Fun times, man.

Basking in the sun...I always felt like a cat while pregnant. Give me a sunny window and 20 minutes and I was out like a light.

Oh yeah. That's some belly right there....a little secret is that she's doing a special portfolio session with me this weekend and she's gonna be 39 weeks...LOVE IT!

My Best Friend's Birth | Ft. Worth Birth Photographer

More catching up! Baby J is already knocking on the door of his six month session. Sigh. It goes by so stinkin fast, doesn't it? Seems like yesterday they were telling me I was expecting twins and now my babies are almost two and a half! Love it.

This was my best friend's fourth baby, second home birth. She's an all around amazing human being and I miss her terribly now that we're here and she's in Kansas. I wish she'd just give in to all my badgering and move down here! ;) The birth was quick and B handled it with her usual grace, charm, and peacefulness. I'm so delighted to share these images since I have a personal, emotional connection with them. Enjoy!

The Twins are NINE Months Old! | Ft. Worth-Dallas Baby Photography

Ok, not really. In fact, I'm heading up to Wichita to do their ONE YEAR smash/portrait session in like, oh, ten days. This is a catch up blogging moment-but the images are to die for. We split the session into two parts and with nine month old twins it was just as well. Sit still? Ha! First we did some with Big Sis Heather (who was my babysitter and I love her to bits) at the Botanical Gardens and then we did an in home studio session with Aunt Evy. I have so many faves I couldn't just pick a few...enjoy!

Catching Up-Favorite Family! | Ft. Worth Family Photography

This family isn't actually from Ft. Worth, that's how behind I am on blogging sessions! ACK! I have to say, running a huge retreat weekend and moving 350 miles all while single parenting takes it out of a girl. My clients have already seen their sneaks on Facebook (and all of them have their disks, even!) but in the interest of putting my work online like a good girl and updating, here's a fun session I did in May! This family is one I've worked with twice in the past. K and I traded for an hour and a half long body massage and a little bit of money for her newborn session (and it was worth every stinkin minute I was there, check her out here if you're in Wichita) and then I did a shoot specifically for portfolio building images a few weeks later. She wanted to catch me before I moved so she snapped up on a special I ran and we met at the local nature trails.

Now, weather in Wichita in May is iffy (as it can be in DFW as well!) so the day we picked was perfectly lit with overcast skies but COLD and so poor C in her tiny dress was a bit on the chilly side. We did our best to warm her up but I'm afraid I didn't get many smiles! Mama will just have to trade me a massage for her one year session coming up soon. ;) And big brother T was quite the handful/ham! K had her babies 18 months apart (as ALL the best mothers do....lol j/k) so she has her hands full. Oh, if only I had a nickle for each time I hear that when I am out in public with my brood of six.....

A Long Awaited Baby Girl | Grapevine, Dallas, Ft. Worth Birth Photographer

This Mama contacted me some time ago and was pretty adamant that having a birth photographer at this, her last baby's birth day, was extremely important to her. Then she was put in the hospital at 32 weeks-just a week before I was to move back to Texas! I was frantic that I would miss the occasion although I had her covered with a back up photographer. Still, no one wants to miss a client's birth! She hung in there for 4 weeks and then when her condition had stabilized she was sent back home to wait for labor. And wait and wait and wait we did. Round after round of 'false' labor contractions came and went and still Baby R stayed put. So finally it was decided that instead of having the hoped for birth at home, they were going to have to go in after her at the hospital. And oddly enough, when my client showed up for her induction she was already in labor! She worked hard for this baby, for six long weeks we waited and prayed and held our breath-first that she'd stay put and then that she'd come out. And finally she arrived and was totally worth the wait....

I love this image. Her husband was holding her hand and her midwife was rubbing her feet during some ROCKIN triple and quadruple peaking contractions.

This is big sister A-she literally followed the baby around the room. Didn't matter who had her or for what reason there was big sis, keeping tabs on that baby sister. *swoon*

And not to be left out of the action, the oldest 'baby' also had to have a turn snuggling the newest addition to a clan of FIVE babies...

I just love family images from a birth. The labor and delivery itself are the drama and action but the family is the heart of this moment. Grandma and Grandpa were delighted to welcome the newest baby!

I was so thankful that I was able to attend this birth. I feel so lucky to have witnessed something so wonderful and to have met the terrific members of this extended village. The love in that room was palpable! Thank you for honoring me with the privilege T&K! :)

Birth Photography and the Cesarean Birth | Dallas Ft Worth Birth Photography

Over the past three years, it's come to my attention many times that women have a mistaken notion about birth photography as it relates to a cesarean birth. I hear, sadly "I would love birth photography but I'm having a c-section". It's as if they don't think they deserve to have their baby's birth day documented simply because the birth is not going to be vaginal. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Birth photography is documentary in nature. It's story-telling via a visual media. I am there to document all the anticipation, all the wonder, all the joy-and all those things are present in a cesarean birth! There is a lot of debate over c-sections right now. Issues such as the overall rate in America, what is elective vs. what is medically necessary, even a pretty hot and heavy battle over choosing c-section for a first birth without indication. There are women who prefer and choose cesareans and there are others who feel forced into them. Regardless of how the baby comes out, however, the day is just as special, just as magical, just as IMPORTANT to both mother and child. As a birth photographer, it is my job to capture the story as it unfolds and I am able to do that in both surgical births and vaginal births. In fact, I will even go so far as to say that birth photography becomes even more vital in the case of a cesarean birth and my presence can play an even more important role, regardless of why a client is choosing to have her baby by c-section.

While surgery is performed, Mom is going to miss a lot. That's just part of the process. She's hooked up to machines and wires and is unable to follow her baby as he or she is observed, bathed, wrapped, and cared for by medical staff. In the optimal setting Mom is alert and aware and baby is brought to her quickly. Even in this perfect scenario, you'll miss a lot that I am able to capture on camera and show to you later. And let's face it-life doesn't always go the way we plan. Drugs make memories hazy, babies need help and have to leave the room for care, surgery may take longer than anticipated--and you'll ALWAYS miss the reaction of your family and friends in the waiting room! These are moments that I am able to be present for by proxy. In most cases I can follow baby and keep shooting and you can rest assured that while it's impossible to see it for yourself at the time, you won't miss it forever.

And while many cesarean births are wanted and planned out, some are not. In the case of a planned vaginal birth turned c-section, the images given to the client later are often a way to help heal the hurts and disappointment. Mom may have forgotten about all the joy and anticipation and these images can bring those feelings back to her. She may be able to make peace with her experience in part because the slide show helps her replay the emotional journey she went on that day.

In today's technologically advanced age, MOST hospitals are allowing births to be photographed regardless of their location or mode of delivery. And if photography isn't allowed during c-sections at your hospital, you as the consumer can go a long way toward making sure your desires for professional photography of your birth are met. I am always happy to talk to your care provider or hospital staff about what I do and show samples of my images. I am also more than eager to rest any fears they may have about compliance with hospital protocols. I strictly follow the rules set in place for every one's safety!

During a planned cesarean birth I will arrive at the hospital when you do. I'll document all the pre-surgical prep. Gowning up, taking meds, getting monitored, being wheeled back. Then I will stand quietly near you while the surgery is being performed, shooting the events as they unfold. After baby is here, I'll continue capturing all the first moments, and accompany Dad out to tell family about the new arrival! Then it's back to recovery as you begin the process of bonding with and meeting your beautiful baby! When siblings and relatives arrive to meet the new baby, I will be there to record the tears, smiles, and precious ooh's and aah's as the new addition becomes part of the family. I wrap up a few hours postpartum and then you get a beautifully laid out slide show of your images set to music plus digital files that are yours to print if desired. I also offer bound books of birth images that tell the story of the day your baby was born. These are especially nice if you also book your maternity and newborn portraits with me!

So, to wrap up, birth photography isn't just for home births or vaginal births, or "other people's" births. The Rainbow Baby | Dallas Birth Photographer

I've attended quite a few hospital births over the years. Many times the births go well and hospital staff is respectful of the mother's wishes for her birth. Sometimes, they don't go so well. Yesterday it looked as if this birth might not go as planned. Upon arrival my client found out that her OB, who was supposed to attend the birth personally and who is 100% on board with no interventions unless required, was out of town and was not going to be able to make it. What I saw next amazed even me. My client calmly, politely, and firmly made it clear to reluctant staffers that she would be having the birth that she'd planned.

And she did.

3.5 hours after arriving and stating boldly that she just wanted to be left alone to give birth, Mandy's beautiful daughter slid gently into the world. Mandy stayed upright. She pushed under her own control. And Mandy's attending doctor had to dive and catch the baby with no gloves on. ;) I feel so honored to have attended such a calm, peaceful, serene experience. Dimmed lights, hymns playing, and just as the birth was imminent, the soft pitter patter of rain drops on the window pane.

There was much laughter. The mood was buoyant and cheerful...

Mandy said "I'm going to go take a bath and then I'm going to come out and we're going to have a baby". And so it was.

I'd never seen someone determine her birth so consciously. It was amazing. :)

Isn't Kara beautiful? I think so. And so did everyone else!

And as I drove away, the sun breaking through the storm clouds, this is what I saw across the street from the hospital:

Mr. E and His Family | Wichita Photographer

I heard from Mr. E's Mom Heather last week. She was hoping we could swap out E's Giving Is Awesome six month session for a family session in this beautiful Spring weather. I was more than happy to oblige her! Last night, we met up and this is what I found:

Um, hello E. You've certainly gotten big! Isn't he beautiful? The choirs of angels are singing.

And here he is with ALL his siblings. Heather and I were laughing last night about how similar our lives are. Our children are fairly similarly spaced (except she doesn't have twins) and our chaos mirrors each other...

And here's the WHOLE family, in two different settings. Cannot believe I actually got all of them to look at me and (mostly) smile. I was on a roll!

And I'd like to ask for your prayers on Heather's behalf this morning. Eli had to go to the ER for a high fever. With his present medical conditions this could be serious. We're hoping it's nothing and he returns home this afternoon well.

The Official Announcement!

After much consideration for where we are in both our professional and personal lives, my husband and I are in agreement that the best move for ourselves and our family is to relocate back to Dallas, Texas.

If you're currently on my Breathtaking Baby plan, you will be happy to know that I plan to come back often to visit my friends here in Wichita so you'll be able to schedule your baby sessions with me when I'm here! I'll get with those of you on the plan to find out what times work best as those months roll around.

I will be booking a limited number of sessions for April and May to allow me time to pack and gear up for the big move. If you're interested in booking a session for your maternity, newborn, baby, child, or family-now is the time!

However, due to the nature of the work, I will no longer be available for birth photography in the Wichita area, starting immediately.

I'll begin taking sessions in Dallas in July, so stay tuned for more information on what I'm planning to celebrate our return home! If you fan my Facebook page (link to the right) you can stay up-to-date on specials!

I'm already booked for births in September, November, and December in Dallas so if you're due in 2010 and would like to hire Breathtaking for your birth contact me ASAP.

Spring Fling! | Wichita Portrait Photographer

This time of the year seriously gets me all giddy! My eldest child will be 8 in just three short days (yes, he's an April Fool's Day baby!)and I can vividly remember watching Spring do her thing that week after he was born. Three days of 80 degree temps in St. Louis meant that trees exploded and flowers poked their heads up and the air was warm with the scent of growing. Ahhhh....memories.

I'm so carried away by the beauty of Spring this year that I've decided to open my April calendar to family and children's portrait sessions as well as my usual newborns and babies! I know how fun it is to get children dressed in beautiful spring clothes and force them to sit still and smile for the camera. HA! I know this because I'm going to torture my own children next weekend as we'll be visiting my best friend and business partner Elizabeth Boyce in Dallas (E and I are running The Birth Retreat for professional photographers in Red Oak, Texas in June). Thankfully for you, Breathtaking is a laid back, easy going business and I do NOT torture other people's children nearly so much as my own. ;)

I expect my limited dates next month to go quickly so contact me sooner rather than later!

A Darling One Year Old | Wichita Baby Photographer

Do you remember Giving is Awesome? Tiny Mr. E. is out of the hospital and home with his family though he's still a long way from being "well". Continued prayers for his family.

Today it came time to visit Christie and her daughter Ivy. Christie was my sole Giving is Awesome nominator (hey, next year you people need to get on the ball, you hear me!?). She put Heather up for the award and in turn won a free session for herself! Now, I've shot Ivy and her big sister Mia before and they are seriously cute girls! I haven't seen Ivy since I dropped off Christie's prints (yes, I'm a full service photographer!) and she was a chubby 6 month old. Today she's a walking, talking 14 month old beauty! And she's still terrified of my camera. :/ We did have some luck getting her to warm up but our images are mostly Serious Ivy. I hope Mama still loves them anyway.... ;)

Her eyes are beautiful pools of dark brown. They're so deep and rich they are almost black. BEAUTIFUL!

Hmmmm, maybe warming up just a little bit.... ;)

Thanks again Christie for nominating Heather. I know she appreciates having a lasting memory of sweet Mr. E during what is turning out to be a challenging year. Hanging out with you girls this morning certainly cheered me up! I will have the rest of these to you shortly. :)

The Easiest Newborn-EVER! | Wichita Newborn Photography

It's funny how small the world is, isn't it? I rely solely on word-of-mouth advertising. I am a small photographer (at the moment) and I just don't have a budget for lots of splashy ad pages. Because of the nature of newborn photography, it's just really neat to have friends of friends of past clients book me for a session. First one baby, then another, then another, until we've grown a family tree of interconnected babies who grow up in front of my lens. I love that organic process. It's one of my favorite parts of Breathtaking. Not to say that I don't enjoy fresh clients who have no prior connection, either. ;) They can just start their own "client tree". :)

Today was one of those days that I got to meet another baby related to my friend Chloe, who is the 'face' of Breathtaking. This little baby boy was the. easiest. baby. ever. Literally the most easily posable, most laid back, sleepiest baby I've ever, ever, ever shot. A total delight. I'm afraid that his parents are going to have a heck of a time choosing their final images from the LOAD we took! I spent 3 hours just shooting. The kid only took ONE break.

Ok, enough of my blabbering. I know you only log on to see the cute babies. ;)

Yum? Yes? More? Ok......

Dude! Does it get any better than that? Feet up by face, smooshy sweet newborn baby, COMPLETELY asleep! A newborn photographer's dream I tell ya.....

Remember P? I haven't seen her since she was a tiny newborn last fall! I got an email from her Mom last week that Sweet P was 4 months old already! Unbelievable. Time flies! We got her scheduled up and today I went to see them. She's so big! And I've got the pictures to prove it:

Breathtaking Baby Club-6 Month Old Twins! | Wichita Baby Photographer

I love my Breathtaking Babies! It's so fun to watch them grow up in front of my lens. I've seen M and E three times now. First when they were just a few weeks old and then again at 3 months. We had another session this past weekend at my home. It was non-stop fun! Having twins myself, I'm used to the insanity that ensues with the joy of two babies. And let's just say, sticking two curious six month olds with bows on their heads next to each other and then expecting them to smile and look pretty leads to some interesting outtakes! But first, the cute!

I call this "Hello Sister"-"Hello bow I'd like to eat!"

And oh, while we're at it, my feet sound quite tasty as well....

A Visit With A Baby Cousin | Wichita Newborn Photographer

I had the pleasure of breaking my long streak of "off" days by meeting the baby cousin of a past client, Chloe. Chloe, I should mention, is really the "face" of Breathtaking:

Her beautiful face graces my advertising and my website. Today, Baby Cora gave her older cousin a run for her money:

They look so similar they could be sisters rather than cousins! Both darling "C" babies. *swoon*

Isn't that sweet? I really loved how the blue 'pops'!

And of course, it wouldn't be a Breathtaking Newborn Shoot if I didn't get one or two naked baby pics....

These shoes came from a loving family member and we worked hard to get this shot. It was the last one I took before Cora was just d.o.n.e. with me! SO glad I was able to capture it!

And of course, I had to get Mom and Dad in on the action. Beautiful family, in my very humble opinion.

I enjoyed my afternoon so much Jill! Thank you for the opportunity to get 'back to work' with you guys. Cora is just as sweet and adorable as Chloe! :)

The Winner! | Wichita Giving Is Awesome Photographer

Computer viruses stink! I'm sorry that I'm late posting the winner to the Giving is Awesome give-away. My computer has been on the outs for the past week. In fact, I'm not sure I'll even get through typing this before it freezes again. BOO! Thankfully I'm a smart photog and I back up all my images. ;)

The winner of the Giving is Awesome giveaway is Heather, mother of little Mr. E! And really, the timing could not be more perfect for this family. Heather and her partner Bob have been in the hospital for nearly two weeks with tiny Mr. E. He has some pretty serious health problems and has had many set backs. What a blessing that they were able to be home for Christmas! The year ahead may very well be a difficult one for them and I am excited to bless them with a little joy through photography. They've already had their newborn session when E was 5 days old and we'll get to see him throughout 2010 as he grows up!

E will have another session at 6 months and then again on his first birthday! A full set of 4x6 prints, one mounted wall print up to size 11x14, and a full resolution CD of images will be presented at each session. And at the end of this year Heather will receive a beautiful, custom made (by me!) coffee table book of images.

Teeny Little Guy | Wichita Newborn Photographer

Today I got to meet Mr. E. He's the newest son of my friend Heather, who we got to see here in the Fall. He's a tiny baby boy, weighing in at 5 pounds 11 ounces at his birth 5 whole days ago. Despite some pretty crummy weather today (freezing cold and drizzling, anyone?) I managed to scope decent light in their dining room. Mr. E was quite the little gentleman and happily snoozed through our session. Heather has had a pretty hard year and she's been nominated for Giving is Awesome by a mutual friend. And as she's my ONLY nominee at the moment (for shame you guys!!!!) and Eli had to be born early we went ahead and got the newborn session under our belts just in case she wins. Of course, if my wonderful readers send me some more names and Heather does not win she still gets a free newborn session so that's not too bad a consolation prize, huh? ;)

Ho Ho Ho! Merrrrry Christmas!!!!

He did this head prop all on his own, no Photoshop required! Silly five day old baby thinks he's big enough to hold that head up (and kept trying to wiggle away from me anytime I put him on his belly!!!)

I can spot a breech baby a mile away (Mr. E turned head down just a couple of weeks before birth). My twins were born like this and to this day, 18 months later, they like to sit with their legs like this!

A Day of Twins Part One | Wichita Baby Photographer

I had two, count them, two sessions with twins today. First up is a session with sweet Baby G. This kid has hair that just won't stop. Seriously. I wanted to eat him up! He's so snuggly and sweet. Mama really wanted some "sleeping baby" images but I had to warn her--two month olds sometimes just don't cooperate. Well, silly me! Baby G wanted his Mama to have what she wanted for Christmas. Isn't that sweet of him? Already treating his mother like the queen she rightly is! Check this out ya'll. It's Breathtaking....

Oh yeah. Aren't those some luscious eyelashes? Ready for more?

Oh man, this is some serious cuteness! And what 2 month old session would be complete without a bright eyed, cooing baby?

Yes, you read that right. G.R.A.N.D.M.A. Yes. I am just as in awe as you!

Now, about this point you're probably saying to yourself "what the heck does this post have to do with twins???"

Meet Baby G's twin cousins, K&K. I practically need to give these guys their own post; so full of personality were they. 2 year old twins? Eh, ask me in about a year how that's going...

Sleeping Beauty | Wichita Newborn Photography

I had the grand pleasure of spending my morning with a teeny bit of baby girl and her very sweet Mama. I hear that she usually sleeps like a rock between 7-11am. Did she today? Nope! Because babies know when I'm on my way. The sense my coming with their little baby sixth sense and they decide that it's much more interesting to be awake and alert.

But they are no match for me and my baby whispering ways...

I have power over newborn babies. They are putty in my hands....

Or, well, it could be all the warm milk? Nah. It's me. Hmmmm..maybe I'm just boring?

Whatever it is, sleepy babies sure make pretty pictures don't they? I love my job! Thanks for allowing me to meet your precious baby girl, J. :)

I Love This Family | Wichita Photographer

Spending 24 hours in a hospital with one family? You're either going to love 'em or hate 'em.

Well, I love 'em.

And I think I maybe have been adopted! That's just fine by me. Close knit, loving, fun. Yeah, I can handle that (and my own family is far, far away).

You've seen em here, here, here, here, and oh yeah, here. Whew! Told ya. They are "my" family now. All other photographers back off. ;)

Today I got to shoot the last of the cousins. I've now done portraits for all 5 grandsons this year. Super cool! These two were fun from the second I arrived. We threw rocks, played in the water, trampled through the mud, leapt from logs. Good times! Baby A even came out to see us (and uh, he's gotten HUGE!)What a delight to spend some quality time with some of my favorite people. In the SUN no less.

Hmmmm, yeah. We mighta stuck them in a tree and told them they couldn't get down til they smiled. Mr. E called our bluff. ;)

Sweet P | Wichita Newborn Photographer

Sweet, sweet Baby P. Gosh, it was cold and gray today. I prayed all the way to my session this morning that they would have big OPEN windows and was so relieved upon arrival to find that they did. And they also had a darling Sweet Pea all snuggled up in her bassinet. Just 13 days old, she was a trooper during four hours of Mama and I harassing her. Come to think of it, Daddy was a trooper, too. ;) I really enjoyed collaborating with you Megan. I hope these images live up to your expectations.

The last shot is often one of the best, and this session was no exception. It was almost an after thought but I'm SO glad I took it.....

You can tell she's just glowing with the love for this baby girl, can't you? Thanks so much you guys, I'll have the rest for you shortly!

Remember baby E from this post last week? Today I had the joy of meeting her again for a little session. She's a very, very pretty baby. She has the most beautiful skin of any week old newborn I've ever seen! No jaundice left and not a speck of newborn acne started yet. As I arrive, Crystal assured me that she was tanking her up on Mama milk and that she'd be passed out in no time. 2 hours and hardly a speck of sleep later.....

That's OK baby girl. I can get some of your teeny toes...

And catch a quiet smile as you finally nod off to slumberland...

Three Blondies | Wichita Portrait Photographer

As I begin to narrow my focus and redirect Breathtaking towards birth, newborn, and baby photography, the days of my shooting family sessions are fading quickly. My friend Hannah wanted to snap up the chance to have me do portraits of her girls. I was thrilled because they are three of the cutest blond babies you've ever seen! My pleasure, for sure.

Can insane Kansas wind keep Hannah from looking beautiful? I think not.

My friend C lost a baby girl last year at about 20 weeks. It was absolutely devastating. So when I learned that she was expecting again I offered to bless them with birth photography. I know they aren't well off and she's one seriously amazing Mama. I wanted to give her something few other people in Wichita can give; professional birth photography. And I'm so, so excited to say that Baby E came into the world pink and screaming and healthy this evening. C was a rock star and endured pitocin without any pain medication. I've given birth 4 times at home and I think she's amazing. I pretty much can't do pitocin without drugs (uh, tried and failed TWICE). I bow to you C, no matter how you felt you were out of control. I promise, you were NOT. E is a darling baby girl and it was an HONOR to be there for her arrival. Thank you so much for the opportunity to share it with you.

I read that once. And now it has begun to resonate with me more deeply. Do what you love. Do what you love.

What I love is newborn photography. I like doing other types of photography, but I love newborns and babies and births. So on January 1st Breathtaking is going to refocus on what I love. If you'd like to have your family or children's portraits done by me, please book a session before the end of the year. I have limited availability as the Holidays grow closer. Fall is a busy time in our house. We cram 1 anniversary, 4 birthdays, and three major holidays into three months!

College Football Fans!

When I arrived to this session I made the embarrassing mistake of forgetting who this family 'represented'. Sheesh! I'm not a Kansas native and I'm not a college football fan so I'm a little lost with the whole thing. Anyway, I've been informed this is K-State and they're quite proud! K booked a family session during my Holiday Card Minis and silly me, I figured that three teens would be a breeze! They were some tough nuts to crack! I eventually got a couple smiles but it was hard work. Lord help me when I've got my own SIX teenagers! Eep! Hope you enjoy the sneakers, family of Kim. Can't wait to see the finished Christmas Card! :)

I'm pretty sure they were laughing at me here. I was forcing them to do mean things like hold hands.....

Today I had the great pleasure of meeting Miss C and her big brother T. They are only 18 months apart, something I am familiar with as my children were all born within 6 years! We had grand plans of getting some images of them together, but T had other ideas. Poor T. His world is just really upside down right now! I managed to get a really cute one on my first shot and then he was off to play with Grampa. Thankfully for my client, Baby C is just the sleepiest, easiest, most laid back baby. Yes, I just knocked on wood. I don't know if she'd hire me again if I jinxed her. ;) I got to tuck and snuggle and arrange Miss C any way I wanted and she snoozed through it all. Fall is in the air and that means the Holidays are right around the corner! This is hectic time of year, isn't it? Parties, costumes, dinners, family, shopping....STRESS! Well, Breathtaking Photography would like to help you cross at least one item off your "To Do" list this year.....

I am offering Holiday Greeting Card Sessions for a GREAT price. These are condensed sessions specifically aimed at getting a BEAUTIFUL image for your holiday greeting cards plus portraits make great gifts for family members!

Here are the details:

-Sessions will be at the location of my choice

-Your session fee covers a nuclear family (parents and kids), OR a small group of children (six or fewer; for say cousins or best friends), OR a small group of six or fewer people (say, a family of four and two grandparents or a couple and their dog, etc). If you'd like to shoot a larger group or have a lot of very young children please contact me about booking a regular session. These sessions are NOT for newborns or maternity. I LOVE doing those sessions but I insist on giving them the proper time and attention they deserve. Babies and pregnant women are welcome to attend though ;). Our priority here will be to get a good family/group portrait.

-Sessions will run for 20 minutes.

Cost is $100 and includes your choice of 5 images on CD with print release and 25 holiday cards. I will have several options available for choosing. If you'd prefer to order or make your own cards with my images the cost is $75. Images will be ready by November 15th! PAYMENT MUST BE RECEIVED IN FULL AT THE TIME OF BOOKING! I will hold your spot for 4 days to allow your check or money order to arrive. I am not accepting credit cards at this time.

I met S at her sister A's birth and we hit it off right away. Both of us are creative spirits and perfectionists. She's creating some really great graphic art for Breathtaking and I created some really fun portraits of her boys tonight!

Boys will be boys! I spent the hour and a half crawling away from me, refusing to smile, and eating everything that took his fancy. G was jumping, running, rolling, talking, and basically your typical three year old. In other words, I had a blast!

There really is nothing I love more than to book a Belly, Birth, and Baby package. Meeting the expectant couple, getting to know them a little, attending the birth of their new baby, and then getting to capture those teeny toes and big yawns..... Well, it's what I live for. I feel like I bond with that family and I look forward to continuing to watch their baby grow up in front of my camera.

Today I got to complete the Trilogy with Baby A. He's a sweet-soft baby boy with tufts of dark hair and lips that can kill. I really enjoyed spending my morning with him. Newborns are my fave. :)

I just spent a very long, very tiring, absolutely wonderful 24 hours at one of our local hospitals with my new favorite family. I knew I liked A and C already. I've done two maternity sessions with them and I think they are really great people. And now I know why! I got to hang out with both sets of parents and various siblings while we waited for Baby A to make his debut. And finally he came with much work and sacrifice on Mama's part. I know you're feeling hit by a truck right now you two, so I hope these make you feel just a tiny bit better.

And a little inside, slap happy, long labor joke: Yes, I really AM still nursing my 15 months old twins. Geez! ;)

Oh, I do so love me some newborn twins. I happily hit up an acquaintance to get my hands on these darling girls. I even offered to do it for free but she paid me in some super delicious home grown organic produce! I CAN be bought for the right price, people! ;)

M and E are the most darling, teeniest, 2 week old babies I think I've ever seen. Took me right back to my twins' newborn days. Oh how I loved to snuggle their delicious heads. I'd do it again in a heart beat.

Pretty as a Flower {Wichita Newborn Photographer}

This baby girl is nicknamed after a beautiful flower and it's quite fitting. I really enjoyed spending my morning snuggling her tiny head. It almost made me want another baby, but not quite enough to do anything about that. ;) We didn't get everything shot today because of pooping and nursing and what looks like a one week growth spurt so I'll be back tomorrow with a few more. In the mean time, enjoy these. I sure did.

I got to meet up with two of my favorite little cuties tonight and it's always a pleasure to see them and their Mom. We had quite the beautiful evening. And good thing! I worked up a bit of a sweat rolling all over the ground and tromping in the brush trying to get Little Miss B to smile! We woke her from a car nap and she was not amused to say the least. It's almost time for her big First Birthday Party. Big Sis did such a fantastic job trying her best to hold still while we worked with the baby. I do truly adore these two girls!

I Need Your Belly! {Wichita Newborn and Maternity Photographer}

I'm currently looking for a pregnant model. In exchange for your help you will get a FREE full digital session. Yes, folks, I said FREE. Read on for the 'strings'.....

Model must be 34-38 weeks pregnant. She must be fit (You're pregnant, totally get that! I just need a fairly fit belly for what I have in mind) and still comfortable enough to move up and down off the ground (we will be outside). In exchange for your time, you will get 20+ full edited images and a print release. You will also be welcome to order prints at my normal print prices.

Session will take anywhere from 2-3 hours and may include multiple locations. You'll have to wear what I want you to wear, stand where I want you to stand, and your family may or may not be included in the images. Basically, you are acting as a model only but you get the finished product anyway (for free!) and I make no guarantees it will be what you were looking for, so to speak. These will be in my style, to represent my artistic abilities and it will likely be included on print or web advertising.

In addition to this, I am also looking for a pregnant twin belly and a twin newborn session. These will also be done completely free of charge. Contact me if you are or know someone who is expecting multiples and would be interested in a free session or two! Same strings attached to these sessions as well (except for the comfortable part....gosh I was miserable in my last trimester with the twins!). Twin Mamas can be anywhere from 30-36 weeks gestation.

And I realized that I'm not happy with the switch I made last month, for various reasons. I'm a simple girl. I like things to be easy. I'm pretty sure many of my clients are the same way.

Breathtaking is going back to fully digital sessions! Prints are, of course, still available for those who want to order archival quality images to frame.

$50 deposit holds your spot
$250 due the day of the shoot
We spend an hour or so having a ball and making great pictures!
A gallery of images will be opened to you two weeks from your session date and will be up to peruse for about 2 weeks time
You pick your best 20 and I burn them to disk and mail with a print release and my blessings

K&K's mom tells me they are often mistaken for twins. Which I can totally see because they are just two years apart, share many of the same features, and are almost the same height! Today I had the fun of joining my apprentice, Chelle, at a newborn session. I have been helping her learn about photography for the past few months and I greatly enjoy watching her grow as well as gaining a free assistant at my own shoots! ;) If you hire me for portrait sessions, you'll probably get to meet her!

Miss A's wonderfully laid back parents were game for pretty much anything and they allowed me to take a few shots of my own. As I have several newborn sessions coming up it was great to touch up my skills! What a darling baby girl! At 8 weeks I was a little worried we'd have a big mess on our hands. Newborn sessions are really best done in the first two weeks before babies get....well, a little more "preference" on what they will and won't let you do! They just sleep, eat, and poop on me when they're tiny. But this bitty one was putty in our hands. The sweetness might just slay you...hang on! Watch out for those lips.....

This is M, and she's all those thing. In 2006-2007 I shot four births. Two of those ladies are pregnant again and I'll have the honor of making them my first repeat clients in the coming weeks! M is one of those and I'm so excited to meet this new baby!

Last night, we met up in Old Town Wichita to get some images of this seriously beautiful expectant Mama in a less than traditional setting. I had so much fun til that nasty storm rolled in and killed the light. She even agreed to hop in the fountain for me! :)
